Level 3 Student Information

ILEX launches the following Level 3 qualifications in September 2008:

• ILEX Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice
• ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice (new Level 3 Legal Executive stage).

All new students starting courses with ILEX accredited providers from September 2008 must take these new qualifications.

The Qualifications Handbook for these qualifications will tell you all you need to know about the new qualifications in a structured and detailed way. 2008/09 Dual Running schedule – this document aims to assist all Level 3 centres  co-ordinate their planning for ILEX processes in the new academic year. Many ILEX centres will have students both embarking on programmes of learning on the new Level 3 qualifications, whilst, at the same time, completing subjects on the existing ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law. This document will assist both Examinations Officers and tutors in understanding ILEX’s administrative requirements for this upcoming academic year.

ILEX’s existing Level 3 Professional qualification

The old Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law will still be available for study during the academic year 2008/2009, but will be withdrawn after a final examination session in October 2009. New students should not be starting studying towards this qualification beyond September 2008. For REFERENCE ONLY  for those who are completing their ILEX qualification under this route, the course details are listed below. 

Mixed Assessment Route:

This route comprises seven units, including the construction of a portfolio of evidence, six pre-seen case studies and an end of course examination. Course content is as follows:

Unit 1 – Introduction to Law and Practice	English Legal System, Legal Method, Business Practice & Procedure
Unit 2 – Contractual Obligations	Contract Law, Consumer Credit, Employment Law
Unit 3 – Property Transactions	Land Law, Registration Requirements, Buying & Disposing of Land
Unit 4 – Family Welfare	Marriage, Marriage Breakdown, Children, Welfare Benefits, Wills & Succession
Unit 5 – Tort and Civil Litigation	Negligence, Consumer Protection, Nuisance, Trespass, Civil Litigation Process
Unit 6 – Criminal Process	Criminal liability, Murder, Non-fatal Assaults, Theft, Criminal Litigation Process
Unit 7 – Business Formation and Practice	Sole-traders, Partnerships, Companies

Assessment: Unit 1 is assessed by completion of a portfolio. Units 2-7 are assessed by six pre-seen case studies. At the end of the course there is a written three-hour examination.

Examination Route:

The English Legal System and essential elements of law and practice are covered in four courses: Law 1, Practice 1, Law 2 and Practice 2. The syllabus is as shown below:

Unit 1 Law 1:	English Legal System, Land Law, Criminal Law and Law of Tort (Civil Wrongs)
Unit 2 Law 2:	Contract and Consumer Law, Employment Law, Family Law and Wills and Succession
Unit 3 Practice 1A & 1B:	1A - Legal Practice, and Conveyancing 1B - Criminal Procedure and Business
Unit 4 Practice 2A & 2B	2A - Civil Litigation 2B - Succession, Family Practice, and Tribunals and Administrative Practice

Assessment: Both Law 1 and Law 2 examination papers are assessed by one three-hour examination. The practice examination papers are assessed by four separate two-hour examinations.
